Artist Statement
Lal Rai is a contemporary visual artist whose work explores the connection between memory, place, and the natural world. His paintings focus primarily on landscapes and portraits, reflecting the atmosphere, emotion, and quiet beauty found in everyday environments.
Growing up in the Himalayan region of Bhutan and Nepal, Lal developed a deep appreciation for nature that continues to influence his artistic practice. The mountains, changing light, and surrounding landscapes of his childhood remain an important source of inspiration. Through
painting, he reflects on personal experiences of movement, belonging, and the relationship
between people and the environments they inhabit.
Working with acrylic, watercolour, and oil, Lal combines observation with expressive colour,
texture, and composition. His work seeks to capture the shifting qualities of light and
landscape while expressing personal memories and impressions.
Through his paintings, Lal invites viewers to pause and connect with nature, memory, and the quiet moments that shape our sense of place.
Artist Biography
Lal Rai is a self-taught visual artist originally from Bhutan. He began painting in the early
1990s, inspired by the landscapes and wildlife of the Himalayan region where he grew up.
From an early age, he enjoyed drawing portraits, nature, and scenes from daily life.
During his student years, Lal participated in several art competitions and received recognition for his work.
He later attended a six-month art workshop in Nepal organised by an art institution, where he further developed his artistic skills and understanding of painting. After living in Nepal for more than twenty years, Lal resettled in Australia in 2012 through
the humanitarian program. After some time away from regular practice, he reconnected with painting and continued developing his work through specialised workshops in oil and watercolour.
Today, Lal continues to create contemporary landscapes and portraits, working with acrylic, watercolour, and oil while exploring themes of memory, place, and nature.
